How Much Does Surgery Cost in China? Real Prices from Published Rate Cards
// DRAFT COPY - needs review
One of the most common questions we receive is: are the prices real? The short answer is yes — and they are verifiable. Chinese public hospitals are required by law to publish their price lists (价目表). The numbers we quote are taken directly from those lists, not from marketing materials.
This article walks through real price ranges for the procedures we coordinate most frequently.
Why Prices Are Lower: The Short Version
Before the numbers, the mechanism. In 2019, China's National Healthcare Security Administration launched a national bulk procurement program for high-value medical consumables. In the first round, 23 types of orthopedic implants — including hip and knee systems from Zimmer Biomet, Stryker, and Smith+Nephew — were procured at prices averaging 82% below previous levels. Subsequent rounds covered cardiac stents, spinal cages, and dental implants.
The quality of the device is unchanged. The supply chain margin is eliminated.
Joint Replacement
| Procedure | China (est.) | US without insurance | UK private |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Total hip replacement | $8,000–$20,000 | $40,000–$80,000 | £18,000–£30,000 |
| Total knee replacement | $7,000–$18,000 | $35,000–$70,000 | £15,000–£28,000 |
Cataract Surgery
Cataract surgery in China ranges from $800–$1,500 per eye for standard monofocal lenses to $2,500–$4,500 for premium trifocal or toric lenses — the type that corrects astigmatism or provides spectacle independence. In the US, premium IOL cataract surgery runs $4,000–$7,000 per eye at most private ophthalmology centers.
Dental Implants
The pricing here surprises most patients most dramatically.
| Procedure | China (est.) | US typical |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Single implant + crown | $900–$1,800 | $3,800–$5,500 |
| All-on-4 full arch | $6,000–$10,000 | $20,000–$30,000 |
| Full mouth reconstruction | $12,000–$20,000 | $40,000–$60,000 |

Every estimate we provide includes: hospital treatment fees, surgeon and anaesthesia fees, standard ward accommodation, and our coordination service fee. Our service fee is listed separately in every estimate — you always see the medical cost and our fee as distinct line items.
Not included: flights, ground transport, hotel for accompanying persons. We estimate those separately.
The Right Way to Get Your Number
The estimates above are ranges. Your actual cost depends on your specific condition, the hospital we recommend, and the implant tier you choose. The only way to get a precise number is through an assessment.
